Outboard Servicing - Warranty question

Hi,
If I have my outbaord serviced by a non-authorised service center during the warranty period, does it invalidate the warranty? It is an Evinrude outboard.

Cheers

Neil

reading through my suzi warranty manual is says the warranty is only maintained if serviced at an authorised suzi dealer, HOWEVER I am fairly sure this wouldn't stand up in court if you could prove it was serviced according to the schedule due to Euro competition laws. Although this may be hard to argue in practice.........
Anybody ever heard of a test case?

I think it's a pretty common occurence.

As long as a warranty claim is not proved to be due to inferior work or materials or improper procedures or the like on the part of the third party, there should be no case for invalidation of the warranty.

That does not mean they won't put you through hell trying to present your casem though.

I ended up calling BRP, and they said it has to be an approved agent. Rang Rib-shop back, and they agreed, even though they are not an approved agent, so they lost the work.

it's a shame, as they bent over backwards to accomodate it.

You are probably right. The OFT intervened with car warranties - because the reality is no one individual is going to bother taking any major engine manufacturer to court over (in legal terms) a small amount of cash. Given that most outboard engineers have an allegience to one of the big companies there is unlikely to be enough truely independents to club together and fight the case collectively.

you can't have much warranty left on the Evinrude Neil. Fairweathers can do the work.

and Fairweathers have the work. But, Rib-shop could have done it without me lifting a finger, or losing a two weekends.

I'm with you there Neil. I would like to use RIBSHOP. Only got a few months left on the warranty and I'll probably get the service done right at the end of the warranty period so considering taking a chance and getting RIBSHOP to do it.
