It is but there is deffinately a gearbox on the back of the engine to give N/F/R but I can't remember the ratio. If its 1:1.5 then this would give 26 knots which is what we all get at 2600 RPM.

22-25 is my crusing speed. I suppose lightly loaded and with a 22" prop I might get a tad more but it means a change of prop possibly to volvo.

I tried last year to put a marinised GM identical to what you have been talking about from Samurai. The customer supplied the engine and wanted us to put an alpha one leg on it.

It just wouldnt have worked with that leg. Besides which it was going to be quite alot of work changing the cuttout on the transom.

At the end of the day we purchased a surplus reconditioned ex Navy 101 leg which was as new and only cost £1800, and put it in with that.

The gearbox was changed to a 2-1 if I remember and the jack shaft altered to suit.

The one problem we had was the engine was much wider than the original Mermaid so the engine covers had to be substancially altered.

The boat worked fine for a few months, then the engine packed up. The owner had got the engine through an importer and had it cheaply marinised.

So back to the drawing board. We fitted a mermaid back in it, and changed the box back. Hey presto, no more problems.

This was an expensive game for the owner. He thought that he could get more speed cheaper. So now on we would always stick to a mermaid. What has been done before is to put a six cylinder ford in, the engine bay doesnt have to be messed around with too much, the bellhousing is still the same, plus there are quite a few sabres on the market.

Do remember the cost, it spirals away and it is all too easy to have an expensive boat at the end of the day!

Thanks for the ideas Neville, helpful to hear from those in the know. I found a 250Hp six cylinder somewhere on the net the other day and considered it, but this boat has had the engine box moved right to the stern and a new console fitted and I think it's too big, will keep it in mind though. The other thing is that it has already had the sternpower leg removed and another fitted, probably a volvo although it's no longer there, so there's not necessarily any reason to stay with sternpower. When a six cylinder diesel has been fitted, what gearbox / leg arrangement was used do you know?

Ok then I think that between the lot of you you've convinced me to stop thinking about V8 diesels! Although Jon Fuller seems to be happy with them, if boatmad ever let me in I'll speak to him about them. I'd discounted the ALpha leg anyway, might have put it on a B1 though instead of the sternpower.

What about the Yanmar 4HLA and Bravo 1 leg? any comments on this setup, 190Hp continuous 240Hp max.
