Parsun 6hp

Hi Guys,

Just bought a nearly new (45 minutes run time remaining) Parsun 6hp four stroke engine.

One of my colleagues at work was laughing at me (kayaker) and said i need to get RNLI rescue on speed dial as its a crap engine!

Can anyone tell me if he's right or if Parsun engines are any good.

Thanks in advance

Andy Hull

There is no doubt Parson is a secondary brand to the main trusted makes such as Mercury, Yamaha, Tohatsu, Suzuki etc. Their low new price should be reflected by an equally low used price.

I have no personal experience of running one but have absorbed loads of chat on here over the decades about them. There have been negative stories and positive ones plus a lot of input from folks like myself with the opinion it's perhaps best to go for a slightly older main brand for any given price than a value Parson new or used.

However Chipko on here has great experience of various engines and bought new a Chinese clone of a Yamaha the other year, just for interest really. In over 80hrs use it proved trouble free and performed the same as the same model Yamaha he also owns. So these cheap Chinese motors can work out OK.

I'd say just be happy with it and assume you have a good one, the moment you don't trust it that's when it will fail!

Maybe ask him how many Kayakers the RNLI rescued last year, and how many died. He might have to save the number himself.

It's 999 or 112, BTW
