Parsun Engine Question

Hi there

Had a new Rib (second hand) with Paraun 4 stroke 9.8hp.

We took it out on a local reservoir yesterday to try it out before going out in the sea next year and it ran great for the first hour then for no reason it kept cutting out. I currently have it in a made up Transom at home It started fine but then as it warmed up (about 20 Mins) it cut out. The water flow from the outflow was steady and strong but I noticed water was also coming out of a small hole the back just above the prop and also just above the rod above said small hole. I’ll try to post a pic as only my second post and not sent one before. Any help advice please. Cheers Daz

Hi Daz, I presume you mean a Sib not a Rib.

When you started the outboard you did open up the small vent in the fuel tank?

Yes tank vent has to be the first thought, including does it actually allow air in when you open it.

Further random thoughts.

I think the cooling water is ok, most models have it escaping other places than the tell tale and exhaust. I guess not but does your model have either low oil pressure or overheating cut outs?

Have you tried pumping the primer as it dies? Spraying some fuel or easi-start in the carb as it dies should prove a fuel or spark issue. If fuel you need to prove the supply is ok… tank, hoses, primer. Then think about the fuel pump and carb.

Ign issues are less likely but I have experienced failure of ign components due to heat soak.

Worth checking the kill cord/stop switch isn’t suffering a random failure

Yes maybe a Sip it’s a. Yam330s sold as Rib ? Yes I have a quicksilver 12L tank which has.a screw on top of the fuel gauge. I opened this but as Fenlander says it may not be working. I suppose I could unscrew the fuel cap to rule that one

Thanks for the reply. A bit to think about there not sure about the oil / heat cutouts will revisit the manual. I pumped the fuel bulb as it was dying and it was solid. Thanks for reply

I suspect you have some crud in the fuel somewhere in the Carb which could be sloshing about and blocking jets. You could also potentially have an air leak from a carb Gasket presuming your outboard is a carb model. If you feel confident perhaps strip down the Carb, clean it out and while doing so replace the gaskets between the carb bowl and the main body of the Carb.

If it's cutting out after 20 mins, I'd be looking at either overheating or fuel starvation from vacuum in the tank.

Try again with the fuel cap itself loose so you can rule out the vent being at fault. You could also try some starting fluid to help you rule out fuelling as the cause.

Hi

Yes I’m going to try that first of all. It ticks over lovely and quiet and then suddenly dies. It does start again but then stops after a shorter time. I believe it’s definatley fuel related so will work through the possibles. Thanks again

Just a thought. When you bought it you did throw the old fuel away and replace it with new fresh fuel?

Yes new full octane fuel E5 which I only use in my vehicles as well 👍
