Problem with an Evinrude E-Tec 150

I have a problem with my E-Tec 150 and I wonder if anybody else has the same thing or is it just me.

I push the throttle and I can get to about 1900 revs and about 10mph with no problem but as soon as I just move it slightly after that there is a sort of click in the engine at the revs go steadily up to 3000 and about 22 mph. No matter how delicate I am I can not get the revs to stay in the 2000s and so the speed range 10 mph to 20mpg is not available to me.

After that it goes steadily from 3000 upwards.

It's a brand new engine, done about 10 hours.

Any thoughts?

Not fantastically useful but:-

Don't even look at it. It's the dealer's problem.

If you do anything you could well invalidate your warranty.

Definately a dealer problem.But still a pain.Keep us up to date as to what was done to fix.Not had an e-tech but 2 fichts only problem was the oil sender unit in the winter.

I have also got a new E TEC 150 (July this year).

Not sure if it helps but there is a warranty recall on certain units for a soft ware issue.

As others have recommended, take it to your dealer or at least talk to them.

I would be very interested to know how it turns out.

Its been no problem. Ive got it set up on the higher grade oil (fully synthetic), expensive but cheaper in the long run and better for the engine.

Fixed Now

After a long delay the Evinrude guys finally "re-mapped" the engine and I got a chance to test it at the weekend and it seems to be fine now. I got the full range of speeds and up to about 49mph out of it with just me on board.

Does anyone know what re-mapping is?

At 2000 to 5000 revs it sounds perfect but at low speed but it sounds awful, at about 1000 rpm / 6 mph (ie the 20 minute trip up the Itchen) as if it is going conk out at any time. Is that normal?

I would take it back to the dealer again, mine is the 115 not the 150 but it will run at low speed for long periods without problem and it is very smooth and quiet.

Sounds like the throttle position sensor that is faulty. Get the dealer to fix it, it is their issue. Don't accept it until it is perfect.

The engine electronics read all sorts of variables: throttle position, engine rpm, O2 content of the exhaust, etc, and the computer decides how to change the amount of fuel injected and alter ignition timing to suit the current conditions. For example, if everything else remains the same, but the throttle is advanced, the computer will most likely increase the amount of fuel injected, and advance the ignition timing a bit to get the increase the rpm desired.

The mapping is exactly how the computer responds to differing inputs. You can change (or re-map) the responses for whatever you want to enhance, be it low end power, fuel consumption, whatever. Usually, the mapping is tuned for overall driveability and smoothness across the rpm range.

This is a very general explanation, not all of it is necessarily applicable to E-Tecs.
