True - but also a few years ago, people also said it wasn't what it was a few years prior to that. Kerry has done a great job of keeping it together and I think the events this year have been decent (at least, the ones I was at).The biggest issue was the "design" for class 1 was to cap the boats at about 100 mph based on weight and hp, but they've managed to get the peak speed now substantially more than that - which is a worry on a long distance offshore race.
But modern turbo motors - almost impossible to police unless you throw quite a bit of money @ policing it.

Hot Lemon - transom exhausts, so needed manual prop ventilation, IIRC?
Swipe Wipes is the current boat without wastegates that I was thinking of. Was at lunch with Nick & Jon that used to race Swipe Wipes today actually, along with Mike Ring, Mark Pascoe (Both of whom are VERY interesting once you get them chatting) and a few others.

Nice bit of name dropping there Matt, to the few who know who those legends(some of them) are.

How is Jon?
From my perspective he's disappeared off the face of the earth.

Its shrunk significantly since the early 80's & very much south coast based so not much to encourage crews from up norf. I'd imagine it would be a struggle nowadays to expand its coverage like most fossil fuel burning sports I think its days are limited.

Yeh a duct system from transom to just above the top of the props which could be opened & closed from the helm

Wastegate isnt a necessity, yamaha ran the same block as 6lp with no wastegate & probably suffered less turbo lag, more than one way to achieve the goal I guess.
Two manufacturers using the same base engine arrived at different solutions but they had big budgets to do their r&d wheras the op is looking for an economy answer for a one off which results in a trail & error approach which gets expensive hence my thinking using an already marinised engine & beefing up the known weaknesses is the best option

For sure. We’re fundamentally agreeing on this.

My biggest regret of my big boat was that I didn’t buy a packaged engine.

Yeah, Captain Chaos organised a nice christmas lunch with everyone.
Jon's good - mostly into his flying these days, I think he said he's not had the cover off his boat for 7 years. If you look on google earth, the boat has sort of faded into the earth....

And Mike Ring - really really interesting guy, so many different things he's done, and continues to do.
