Prop or more serious?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Took the Earl out sat ,with yet another second hand outboard ,prop right jaggered up,so going at 6 odd knotts opened her up ,get acceleration, start to pick up, then horrid vibration,i throttled down,me thinks not just the prop, more like gears,oh dear what have i brought now?would the prop be the reason for this?can t believe its just a roughed up prop?no expert mind, just something not right?

Loverly sound ,started after a few pulls, get a good speed up with all the gear ,two of us as well ,smooth as,soon as i throttle up ,feel it pick up speed jolts forward, picks up speed then a rattled viabration,i throttled down, every time it done it, was worried i would do the gear box?few people have said ,it will be better when the props done, the prop is very jaggered, just hard to belive it has that much effect?

i would rule the prop out first i mean they turn quick if the balance is off i should imagine it would vibrate if its not the prop move on to the next suspect..daniel

An out of balance prop can make a huge vibration! I once had a prop that looked pretty good and the vibration was awful, I thought the bottom end was gunna fall off! One prop recon later and it was purring like a pussy cat! Hope yours is the same!

If your prop is badly damaged, you may have damaged the gearbox due to the excess vibration. Similarly, if the prop is damaged it must have hit something. There could be internal damage to the gearbox as a result of this, and/or you may have a bent prop shaft which could also be causing further damage/vibration etc.

Posting a pic of the prop would help to indicate how bad the problem is likely to be. Also check and see if the prop shaft is bent by rotating it with the engine in neutral (and switched off of course!)

I had a similar problem once. Hit something in the water. One blade on the prop was damaged. Limped home with it vibrating quite a lot, cost £2000 to fix :-(

I did this and thought I done a lot of damage to the engine...but it was all fine. I thought the engine would drop off it vibrated so much getting home...
