Protecting your engine?
Hi guys,
I was speaking to someone who told me they coat their entire outboard engine (apart from the anode) with waxoyl to help prevent corrosion in salt water. Waxoyl is (I think) a liquid used to protect car under carriages from rust.
I have gone out and bought a tin, but am now reluctant to put it on untill I am sure it won't cause any problems.
Do any of you use waxoyl, or can see any possible problems with this?
Cheers in advance,
Geoff.

Can't see it causing any problems but it won't look very pretty - I hope you bought the clear one and not the black???

Thanks Codprawn. Yes, should have said I have got the clear one. Will it still look bad?
I should add at this point my engines are not on a shiny rib machine, but a Avon S3.40 Typhoon SIB that I use for fishing.

The problem you will have is that dust and sand will stick to it like the proverbial to a blanket!!!

And everytime you handle it, it'll get everywhere! Tubes, hull, clothes....Just doesn't bear thinking about

I spray all non-painted metal under the cowling with Boeshield.
I do not do anything special to the motor exterior; there's not that much there to corrode.

Hi,
I have never used this stuff before, and didn't realise that it makes such a mess. I won't be using it from what you have all told me.
Thanks for your help.
Geoff.

Evinrude (BRP) make some stuff that I use called Anti Corrosion Spray that gives a waxy coating to the engine I think this would be a better bet as it is designed for use on new Evinrude engines, in fact you get a can with the new engine

I do polish my engine on the outside and the engine regularly with W40 so all time clean and salt free and no corrodes on electrics

No. It doesn't last long.
Quicksilver Corrosion Guard is better-though regular use of WD after for the electrics is a good idea.
