Personally, I'd pull it while it's running, it'll be hard enough to get a 2cyl to start on one never mind listen for a difference. If you get a belt (could be up to 30kV but very low current) then your HT leads/caps need replacing anyway and are probably the reason it's misfiring in the first place. If you want to use tongs to pull it then fair enough, but I don't own a pair and I've been doing this for a fair length of time now In fact, I've being doing it for most of the morning on a 3cyl.

If it even runs at all! You may need a LOT more throttle to keep it going.
If you've had it running, just pull the spark plugs out - the oily one is the one not firing right
Another thought, assuming it's twin carb, are the mix controls & chamber float valves both set properly?
I have had mostly 3 pot engines for the last few years. Both my my "old faithful" '72 vintage Johnson 25 and previous Yam 55 are / were 2- pot. I thought they sounded really rough (even on a good day) compared to a 3 cylinder machine.

I prefer to say they sound more like gun fire when running on muffs, best sound ever....

If you are really fussy you could do what my old man used to do and use kids toy plastic pliers for taking plug leads off ,,though you can buy them for the job now ,,i keep some in the boats tool kit ,not for my boat as much as other people we come across having bother .,,even wearing wet suit gloves you can still get a shock they if they have salt water residue on them .
