Current thoughts amongst our safety helms seems to favour stainless props — we're trying to find one to replace the aluminium on a Honda BF50.

We've smashed a couple of aluminium props beyond repair, and had a few big-ish strikes with stainless props on the Mercurys, but never had any problems with either gearboxes or prop shafts. I've got a feeling we may have broken a couple of rubber sleeves on the stainless ones.

I once backed off the beach into a granite boulder lurking beneath the surface with a more power than usual, and that wasn't enough to damage anything beyond a bit of a dent in the trailing edge of one blade. Even the rubber sleeve was unaffected. I don't intend to produce a larger sample of experimental results, though ...

I tagged a rock with my stainless prop (F115); $180 later was repaired. No gearbox issues. I've also grounded an aluminum prop quite a few times, mostly sand/gravel, but rocks a few times; no gearbox issues there either. Replacement aluminum runs about $150 here; SS runs closer to $400.

come on, just fit the bloody prop, life's too short to worry about it and its on a work of art when it's working, just hang your head over the stern and watch the art of the prop running hard
if you ask me nice ill let you have a look at my prop on Saturday

I was tempted to try some SS props but got a similar response especially with the engines having a bit of age to them didn't want to put to much stress on the boxes.

Ask Avocet (quietly)....

Ss props can transform performance..If you own one I'd fit it and just be more careful.

I wondered which of the usual suspects would be first ......

Just be very, very careful: hitting SS props damages not only gear boxes but your bank balance and no claims bonus not to mention street cred.

Most props have a rubber mount in the centre designed to torque limit to a level that the gear box can handle..... lol..... Do I believe it will stop damage to the box all of the time... errrrr NO.....
