Service costs for Suzuki DF175

I've just had my first 50 hour service carried out at a Suzuki Marine dealer. Including Vat, the total cost was £236.00.

Included labour, fuel filter, oil filter, 2 x 4 litre tubs of Engine oil, a quantity of gear oil, 5 x engine block anodes, engine oil filler gasket.

Does this seem like a reasonable charge? Anyone else got similar charges for a 50 hr service to compare?

Thanks,,, Brian

Fair point, but...

I have a client who supplied about 50 units of a packaged product for me to dip into for a job I'm doing for him. This is to my financial disadvantage but I'm cool with it, I make my money elsewhere on the job. There is no way for him to oversee the quantity used and effectively, he has to trust me. So far, so good, except that he doesn't trust me . After much thought, he decided the only way that he would be happy is if I give him back the empty packaging after the job, plus the unused units, so he can check on me.

The point of this story is that I STILL won't be nicking his product, but I can't help downgrading him in my own mind from "valued client" to "cnut". He'll still get a good job done. However I'll not be doing him any favours.

Looking at the parts and lubes that have been changed and a labour time of say 2 hours. The cost is about right. By the way the DF175 takes 8.5 ltrs of oil with a filter change. I think that the engine oil filler gasket mentioned should be a sump plug washer, which should be changed each time it is removed.

My main concern for you is that the dealer is not following the maintenance schedule. First service from new, 20hrs or 1 month, To be done by a dealer. Every 50 hours specific items to be inspected and lubricated as required. This the owner could do. The next dealer service is at 100hours. This is when the oil change reminder system would be activated by the ECU. When you turn the ignition switch on the oil light in the Tacho will flash and the alarm buzzer will begin a series of double beeps. This is telling you that the engine has reached its next service interval. This should be cancelled by the dealer at service.

You have had this work done at 50 hours which not required, also from experiance the block anodes will usually last more than 50 hours

Are you still doing that 'male escort' work?

In my current state, if I was, he'd be getting 49 back intact.

Are you subcontracting work for JSP or is it just a natural bent?

Does he just rinse out the 49 you never managed to break?

Hi, Thanks for that. This was actually it's second service. It had it's first service at 23 hours and then the second recent '50 hr' service at 70 hours, so I had done 47 hours since the last service. This is 3 hours before the service warning buzzer would activate.

Is 70 hours about right for changing the block anodes and should it have had the water pump impellor replaced??

Thanks again,,,,, Brian

Hi Brian , I would of DEFINETLY changed the block anodes if I DID THE SERVICE and the IMPELLER . the block anodes are a crucial part as we all know what salt water does too out cooling passages on outboard motors . Your engine should get a 20hr service and then after at 100hours . that price sounds right too me . baz

Hi Brian,
My main point was that you did not need a 'dealer' service even at 50 hours after your first 20 hour service. The service alarm will activate at 100 hours and that is when the 'dealer' service is required.
As for the block anodes they may have needed changing. It of course depends on the wear rate.
However, unless you have damaged your water pump impeller in any way. It DEFINITELY will NOT need changing at 70 hours from new. Suzuki impellers are quite big for the horsepower of engine and good quality. Normal service interval is 200 hours or 2 seasons use.

Thanks for that.... I did talk with the dealer a couple of months prior to getting the service done. He said that the alarm would go off after it had clocked 50 hours from the last service. When I queried the work that had been done, he said that it was correct to the service schedule. When I checked the manual, I think he may be correct since each service period is shown as x number of months, or y number of hours. That said, when I originally asked for a price, it was significantly less than I ended up paying. His comment was that his price wouldn't have included the cost of parts!! I wasn't too impressed by this since why would I ask him for a price for the service and not want the price of parts too?

Where would I get a service manual/schedule for a DF175? Mine has 500 hours on it and I would like to know what needs to be done

Id ring Suzuki and check with them. If they dont help PM me and I will have a look in my manual and see if it states what needs doing. The book is at home and Im at work, so cant tell at the moment.

There is also a Suzuki owners forum you could try as well.

Or try this: Suzuki Maintenance Schedule / real world vs. owners manual. 175 4 stroke - 342767 - Page: 1

Yellow Penguin in Poole did the first service on my DF175 and it came in at approx £220 inc VAT from memory. They seem knowledgeable and carried work out to a high standard. Would recommend if you are ever in the area.
