Servicing

Hello, first time on here so I appreciate any help/advice. Can anyone recommend a service engineer in either Essex/Cambs area or alternatively in North Norfolk. Need to get a Tohatsu 9.8 2 stroke serviced - 2000 model, but last used around 2005. That said it started first pull!

Many thanks.

Welcome to the forum.

There is so little to do servicing these and no part of it is complex... could you get a manual and follow that to DIY the job?

Great motors BTW.

Thanks Fenlander, I was going to go the DIY route as you suggest although thought might as well get a pro to look at it given its been sat there for so long - piece of mind as much as anything. Was a bit of a find as its hardly been used - just as an aux on a yacht and then put in storage for years.

If it started well and pumps water OK then you're off to a good start. These motors are so basic (in a good way) I'd DIY it. Plenty of help will be offered on here if you go that route.

Thanks again - yes plenty of water being pumped. I've had a look on line and it doesn't look too difficult - new impeller was my biggest concern given age. So change that, plugs, gearbox oil and fuel filter and hopefully thats it. Cheers.

Yep... my list would be...

New impeller regardless of condition.
Change lower unit oil (use marine type only).
Remove prop and grease splines with waterproof grease.
New plugs regardless of condition.
New fuel filter regardless of condition (in case any "gums" from fuel have settled).
Drain carb to check for debris, perhaps removing float bowl to clean.
Check anode condition/tightness.
Grease nipples and oil/grease other moving parts such as throttle links under cowling.

Re tuning you could set carb idle speed/mixture and check timing if you have a light... but no real need if it runs well.

Thanks again Fenlander, very much appreciated - I'll go down that route.

All the best, BH

Hi Fenlander et al,

I came on here with a similar question. I have a Tohatsu 9.8 4 stroke? Could this be DIY serviced?

Thanks

Yes as I said above Tohatsu engines of this size are a very straightforward to learn on. Get a manual either paper or online and follow the steps. Ask any extra questions on here.

For yours being a 4-stroke the schedule would be...

Check & drain or replace fuel filter.
Drain and perhaps remove carb bowl if any debris seen.
Check plugs/gap or replace.
Change engine oil and filter.
Change gear oil.
Remove prop and grease splines.
Check/replace water pump impeller.
Check/replace anodes.
Lubricate grease nipples and other moving parts.

Check valve clearances/check ign timing - Somewhat optional on a yearly service but desirable.

Check timing belt condition - gets more important as engine age/hours near the change point.
