Shrapnel
Hi Guys
I found a 3mm bit of steel on the magnetic oil drain plug while changing the oil. This 2 stroke mariner 60 bigfoot was struggling to find reverse last summer.
The lower leg is off to change out the impeller, should I pull the gears out as well ?
I'm not sure how to attack this but I can take photos. ;0)
A manual would be great .....
Cheers

OUCH!
I'd have a go at opening the box, that looks like either part of a gear or a dog.
be careful though, it's probably going to be a difficult job to remove the castellated ring that holds it all in.

Yes, it needs stripping. You'll need a manual. I think I have the manual for the gearbox, but you'll have to make sure.PM me an email addy and I'll send you it.
You might find it a good idea to get a new castellated ring ordered. It's unlikely to come out in one piece.

Ah, there's no castellated ring on that one. I think that's probably as well, it'll make stripping it easier!

Lol .. a look see is on the cards though ... I'm thinking stainless prop maybe hit something .. which is notoriously ouchy on the box ..

I think what Bigmuz is implying is the weight of a stainless steel prop on a bigfoot engine compared to an Ali prop is causing the problem. think about how the dog clutches go in and every time the gear level is operated from N-F-N etc. That's a lot of weight accelerating then stopping and reversing without the advantage of a clutch to smooth it all out.
I used to cringe when beginners pussy footed about putting it in gear.

Ok in from the shed here's the story.
Found where the shrapnel came from
It's the shift cam that lives down here
It was easy enough to get this stripped out so where do I buy the parts, seals & rings ?
I have Loctite 243 medium strength threadlocker will that do or should I get 271 High strength stuff ?
The manual says 2-4-C grease with teflon. What do you guys suggest and from where ?
Cheers for your help

For the enlightenment of others, given your undoubted experience, can you suggest what caused the failure ?
