Small Johnson outboard
I am trying to identify a small Johnson outboard There are a few tell tale markers which could help identify it. Can anyone give me an idea on year and hp from these Markers/pics? Please
1) only 1 transome clamp
2) the starter pinion is horizontal
Has anyone got any ideas please so I can start my search for parts?
Thanks in advance
Andy

I'm guessing about 6hp around 1970. Have a look at a site in the USA, crowleymarine. com go to parts catalogue and begin with the older models and work up, the engine will become familiar the more you look.

Thank you will try that but they seem to have endless models for varying hp. I think it's smaller than 6 as it weighs less than my Evinrude 6 and most 5 hp upwards seem to have 2 Transom brackets.thanks once again though.

Actually, I think it is an evinrude 4hp, but older than this one as yours is a single bracket, if do its pre 1968.

I think it is a 4hp Lightwin, there are a lot on you tube but a have 2 clamps. Post some pics under the lid, it may help. The key is the shape of the leg where it meets the gearcase, if looks slightly bell bottomed. Crowley only goes back to 1968 which makes an exact answer difficult.

Everything points to that being a 3 hp twin 1966 or 1967. They were the only models with one clamp. But, the cowling should be a wrap around with integral tank. I'm looking at marine engine.com in the USA. I wonder if the European models were different. In 1968 the bracket went to two clamps, but the lid became GRP. You have an unusual model there and I can't place it exactly.

As a last throw of the dice, 1968 with an older bracket fitted. If you look on you tube you will see what i mean. I hate a mystery. 1968 fits better, it's the single clamp that's the issue.

It's a mystery, here is a 1968 folding, clearly showing the clamp. The 1967 had the single clamp but the cover was totally different. Weird.
The pain is your clamp says 3hp but the lid says 3 or 4 hp, my bloody head hurts now!!
Anyone else want to try??

Maybe the lid has been damaged and replaced in the last 45 years?
I doubt the clamp would have been replaced with a single if it originally had a double.

Transom clamp screws seize solid and replaced clamp as there was one lying around? The later plastic cowl type clamps used to seive quite easily from memory.

I think the only way to find out would be to take better photos and email some of the vintage outboard places in the USA.
It is a really strange one. The lid and tray scream a late 3 hp or a 4 hp, but the clamp and brackets are from an earlier 3.
It may be that there was a variation like on the newer ones. The lids and tray were different if you had a tank attached or a remote one, but I'm blowed if I can find it.
One thing is that the clamp looks ok, if it's just powerhead parts that's needed they should be easy to find.

Thanks for your help all. It is deffo a folding model. By going onto marineengine.com I have searched nearly every one (folding) and none of them seem to fit the bill eg clamp good, cowling wrong or vice versa. So maybe the clamp has been changed. I will keep looking and you are a fantastic squad! Glad you like a challenge.
Thank you all and God bless you. Keep posting though if you come up with summat :+)

Just to add that I have found out on another site that it could be a 1969 4hp folding model which was discontinued the same year. The site stated that the earlier did have a flat cowling and the round one on these models were a one off in 69 hence the case it came in looks similar to a flat cowling.
The plot thickens ,
Andy
