Sound deadening material for cowlings

Hi
Anyone know of a source for sound deadening foam suitable for use inside a cowling please? Looking to replace some lost pieces of the material in the cowlings of a pair of Mariner 50 2-strokes - looks like there's a kit available for $32 in the US, £40+ over here but hopefully you can just buy the sheet somewhere and cut it to shape - any suggestions? Thanks

If you buy (or stand in WH Smiths) a mag like PBO, there's loads of adverts in the back for this kinda stuff.

Turbodiesel,

Do these covers make a noticeable difference in sound?

Well, the kit I've seen is the OEM part already cut to shape so it varies depending on the exact motor of course, I found a few US suppliers by first using this site

1993 50 9683055 THRU 9885344 MERCURY Parts at MarinePowerService.com

to find the part number (0-814336A02 for my motor). Looks like you can order direct from that site although I can't see any confirmation they ship internationally but googling the part number throws up several other firms as well, eg

https://www.sunsetmarine.com/mercury...-adhesive.html

Shy Beaver Boat Center,James Creek, Pennsylvania, Avalon, Crownline, Larson, Cruisers Yachts, Stingray, Boat Dealer, Used, Parts, Swimwear,Service

814336A02 | SOUND BLANKET KIT | Mercury | Crowley Marine

etc

Haven't yet tried ordering from any of these but have sourced stuff from other US suppliers before when the UK price has been silly by comparison and it's always worked smoothly although shipping costs, import duties and tax and courier charges for processing the latter tend to add up

Anyway, hope that helps

Hi

Thanks for the suggestion - and they look ike nice covers - but I'm really just after the stuff that goes inside the cowling, to replace parts of the original kit which are missing

Cheers

Yeah, they make them for the Military so you might need to talk to them about buying some!

I just emailed them and they basically said that their acoustic cover should decrease sound at low speed by about 18%, but not at all over 3000rpm. The price is double the standard cover and it must come off after every use at is not a breathable fabric. They seemed very honest and based on this email probably a company I would want to deal with.

Email attached below for reference.

"Yes we do a basic acoustic cover that has 2 layers of our fabric and
sandwiched between that is a acoustic foam.
Our product will help reduce the noise up to about 18% but once you boot the
motor up and it's revving over say 3,000 rpm nothing will keep it quieter
based on the tests we have done with a sound engineer and UK military.
You have to install the cover and take it off after every use as the foam is
not a breathable fabric and may over time if left on damage the decals
because the cover does not breath.

If this sounds ok to you, you can get a price from our site by going to
Tohatsu and then QUOTE, but you will need to double that price as we are
using 3 layers of fabrics. Is it worth it? We are not convinced based on the
price that it will do the job you want, but that is your call I guess???"

I experimented with screwfix best pipe lagging on the Clamshell clip cover. Significant improvement. Now need to find a fireproof alternative!
