Steering cable lubrication

I've never seen this discussed. Should lubricating the cable be seen as routine maintenance? It's a pretty critical piece of kit! How would I go about it?

Personally Id treat them as consumable items that need replacing periodically there not expensive in the grand scheme of things & usually last in excess of 10 years without any maintenance

Previous owner changed it in the last few years I believe, but I worry about the rack failing. How much play is too much play? What's the failure mode?

You can use a grease gun at the steering tilt tube (nipple points) at the outboard end, but that's it. I'm thinking of replacing mine as coming up for 11 years. Basically fit and forget.
