strating outboards thatbhavent been run for 8 years!

these outboards yam 15 and mariner 25 2 strokesthey have been stored dry warm indoor enviroment for about 8 years, they were run out of fuel and left for along time after my surgery,im just getting back into boating now after finally moving to devon ,
first thing i am waiting on is impeller kits as thats a definate mustdo first , but while waiting was looking over motors and see these still have fluid in see picys , presume they are filters ,
was surprised to see fluid in them after all this time is this water oil or old fuel /2 stroke?
do these unscrew to drain or are they a sealed unit? and need replacing

also got new plugs on order is there anything else you would do before starting a motor that has stood for this long i will be spraying some foggin oil in just before

anyone with any advice on starting hybernated outboards greatly appreciated

whats the chances these will start up and run after this long sitting?

They are fuel filters, have them off and give them a clean out. There are plenty of videos on YouTube about this procedure. You’ll want to get the plugs out and shoot some stuff in the bores and turn it over slowly to free it up. Even though it was run out of fuel there’s a high chance the carbs will want some love.

thatnks for the responses thats reasurring yours started , think i will have a look at carb bowl while waiting for impeller kit ,got new plugs to pop in as well , did read about putting fogging oil in barrels first did you do that ?
the yamaha 15hp was hardley used still looks brand new bet its got less than 20 hours on it the mariner 25 was used a lot more because it has all the remotes and steering for it it on the bombard , the 15hp will do me for now blow up hook on and just go with the tiller fingers crossed anyway
still got to blow the bomabard aerotec up and see if 8 years storage has had any effect on that yet

Put some 2 stroke oil into cylinders and leave it sit for a while before cranking (plugs out)

Consider proper carb rebuilds before staring and using

it had been fogged so i didnt bother but as said two stroke oil wont harm it for a few days while you sort other things

I started my Yam 8hp after 5 years and it started second pull. I have a cooling issue atm but the engine is sweet.

Follow the advice on here and they'll both run a treat.

My Suzuki/Johnson DT5 hadn't been run for a long long time - certainly 10 years, maybe as much as 20.

The only thing it needed was as you note - a carb rebuild. Probably could have just got away with flushing the float bowl, but since was tricky to get to the drain bung, was easy enough just to do all the jets etc at the same time once I had the carb removed. Runs sweet as a nut now.

Give it a few pulls with the kill switch off to get some lubricant through the bearings and splashed around inside the motor.

Cleaning the carb is always a good idea after prolonged storage so that's good advice from folks.

Great news hopefully the fogging oil hasn’t fouled the new plugs
