Stupid question

Are Mercury and Mariner exactly the same engines with a different coloured lid on them?

I thought Merc did the Optis etc and Mariner did mostly four strokes but I was just looking at Barrus website and the range seems to be the same...

Yep same engine. Whilst Barrus did Mariner and Sowester did Mercs at least there was a chance of getting spares through either dealship. Now its all Barrus. Still at least Turbodiesel posts on hear and provides some useful info.

Interestingly I believe that Tohatsu / Nissan also make engines for Mercury / Mariner (or they certianly did for 2-strokes). I've got a Merc4 2S that is effectively a Tohatsu 4 but you pay a lot more for the merc version.... Only discovered this when I went to get spares for it.

I know Merc used to source powerheads from Yamaha.

Don't know about Tohatsu or Nissan.
