Suzuki DF9.9 into DF15 - is it really that easy?

Having had a play with my 'new' SIB, I'm feeling that I could use a bit more power.

Looking at the manual and parts list for the Suzuki DF15, it looks like the only changes from my DF9.9 are a new carb body, new jets and an accelerator pump. This means that for an outlay of less than £100 I get 50% more power

Am I missing something?

Cheers

Chris

Good point

It turns out I had also missed the air intake and the vat, but with those added it still only comes to £106.

Cheers

Hi Chris, slightly off topic here sorry.

Does your 9.9 have a decompression option for manual starting?

Yes, I believe both the 9.9 and 15 manual start engines have a decompressor as standard, the electric start options do not.

Cheers

Hi Chris, did you ever get your 9.9 converted because I'm now the owner of one and it's a big lump to only put out 9.9hp!

Before I sell it I'm trying to find out if anyone increased the power to 15hp.

Thanks
Brian.

Yes, I did.

I can't confirm it is definitely 15HP now, but top speed at WOT increased by about 25%, so I would say it probably is. Equally, it hasn't gone bang so no ill effects.

I can't remember where I got the prices in the original post from - in the end I bought a complete new carb assy from the USA, which cost a good deal more - bear in mind that at the time my OB was nearly new, and to P/X for a same age 15HP would have cost more than the carb - for an older OB you may be better off just P/Xing it. That said the DF15 has been around a good few years now, so there may be people breaking them and consequently second hand carbs available.

Photos of the two carbs side by side - spot the difference

Cheers

Chris

Love the way they funnelled the intake side instead of just fitting a restrictor plate on a 2015hp carb, I wonder if the intake funnel could be bored out? I bet it's hollow thus making it more difficult

As well as the increased bore the DF15 also has an injector pump, making a DIY upgrade a non starter, I'M.

My one and only experience of suzukies was not a good one, I got a late 80's or early 90's 4hp 2 stroke DT4 run like a pig, impeller housing blocked 90% with years of crud spent hours err I mean days cleaning all the water flow blockages, and it still never pumped a jet of water then I moved on to tuning, I couldnt read the original main and idle jet numbers but worked out it was somewhere between 90-110 for the main jet on the various U.S parts websites, there were so many options for replacement jets, online forums suggested the dt4 was a restricted dt5 or dt6 however I never got it running right 100% let alone getting more power from it, I think I jetted it at 97 and sold it. I was disappointed as every other Suzuki machinery I've had including 4x4s have been faultless!

Hi Chris. I am looking to do the same with my 2010 DF9.9. Was it just a case of swapping the complete carb and that was it?? I’m new to this boating altogether but just bought a walker bay 310 with the 9.9 on and it feels a bit underpowered any help would be much appreciated. Thanks Brad

This is an old thread but I looked into buying a new carb and was cheaper to sell the engine and buy a 15HP two stroke
