Suzuki engine stopped starting

Hi All, I'm new to this forum and to ribs so thanks in advance for any support you can give me. Yesterday I went out for a family day trip on our rib..everything started well, engine started no problem, left the marina, hit a few swells but slowly then went I went to accelerate it just started gurgling and died. Tried restarting several times but could never get it back. Did some YouTube troubleshooting but nothing worked. Towed back in and now I'm worried. Specifically about potential water in the fuel and in the engine and any corrosion that could cause. I'm waiting to get it looked at by a pro but feel I could be doing more myself while waiting. Should I just wait a day or two or could the salt water cause serious damage in the meantime? Alan

What engine? Deck fuel tanks or under deck internal tank. New fuel? Fuel bulb can you pump that hard or not?

A bit more information will allow for some diagnosis

Fuel pick up blocked due to rough water stirring the sediment up?

First thing I would do is put some water to the impeller to save it, then spray some starting fluid into the intake and quickly verify if it is a fuel problem or electrical. Then you can continue diagnostics.

Thanks Neil. It's a Suzuki 150 engine. Bulb wouldn't go hard when pumping and the tank is inboard under the floor. Newish engine not sure what year but in good nic. Managed to hook it up to a clean line of fuel today and flush it out with a friend that knew more thankfully. Got it running again. Now I need to find the source of the problem. From talking to others jt could be water getting into the tank somewhere or the main fuel filter jn the bilge potentially problematic. Installing a fuel water separator too this week to help with any future issues.

Interesting. Do you mean in the fuel filter?

This is what happened to me with a new to me yam 115
when you are moving slowly on level, fuel floats on say 3/4 inch of water that has settled at the bottom of tank , fuel take off is maybe an inch above bottom of tank ,as you start to accelerate the tank tilts and the inch of water now becomes considerably deeper therefore sending water down the fuel pipe ,engine wont run on water
my yam 115 has a water removal filter under the cowal with an alarm on it so this gave the clue .
Empty the tank and use it in your lawn mower ,buy some fresh e5

Good to know thanks. Yes I'm getting a fuel water separator I think will alert me to water. Need to clear the tank as you say and start again. Cheers

If the bulb won’t pump hard first thing to check is the bulb. If the baffle has gone that would explain your issue. Take it off and try to blow through it both ways. You should be able to one way and not the other.

If you can blow both ways it’s bust

Bulb not going hard suggests the internal diaphragm has failed, either that or the fuel connections on the engine. I used an aftermarket Tohatsu fuel connector and the rubber ‘o’ ring was dislodged allowing air in. Always used OE parts after that. Not aware of Suzuki fuel connector issues unless pattern parts?

Would be worth pumping fuel out of the tank to check anyway, and definitely worth installing the inline filter, just a good safety measure. Did you check the fuel filter on the engine too? Any signs of water ingress if you drain off?

Cheers. Going to continue with a process of elimination this week.

In the tank you’re not getting a hard bulb that might be it’s not getting fuel due to a blocked pickup in the tank.

Fuel lines are ok I presume old ones can collapse blocking fue
