Testing 5 very different outboards and 10 props on a SIB

Some may call me crazy, but I’ve actually bought (and sold) 5 different outboards within the last two years in search of the perfect outboard for my SIB. I can reveal right away that there is no perfect outboard for all situations, but there is good and bad with (almost) all of them. Hopefully my experiences can help somebody else.

This writeup includes pictures, tables and is to long for a post so I put it in a pdf and linked to the pdf.

For some reason the link above doesn't work that well. Here is the link as plain text. Copy and paste into the address field.

The link in #1 worked for me.

Good write up, some interesting findings.

Are you Fenlander’s Swedish cousin?

(Except you need to change it to 20 OB’s in the last 15 years…).

Hmm well I am trying some Swedish fuel tomorrow.

I really enjoyed the report and despite only having owned the Suzuki from that bunch I'm pleased the conclusions follow my gut feeling on them all.

Just had a count... you only need to transpose the numbers and you're there... 15 outboards in 20yrs. Actually dhaglund may have motivated me to write up "My outboard journey". What's that... do I hear the cries of please don't?

Can the release date be mid Jan. When the days are short, the nights are long, the weather is gloomy, and it's just nice to settle down with a good novel in front of the fire

. I'll take that as compliment.

We're all looking forward to Fenlander's new novel. Maybe in several volumes?

By the way, I bought my first RIB six years ago. I'm now on my third RIB. And you have to keep in mind that this writeup was only regarding the outboards for this boat. Maybe I have some sort of issue?

Interesting write up but when comparing motors you need to be at least on the same HP IMO

Interesting. I never meant for this to be a fair comparison of motors but rather what worked on this Zodiac Futura. But I guess I focused quite a bit on the motors. So for future readers I added a little more about how each engine worked on the boat.

That’s fair enough and naming the boat does go some way to allow people to choose the boat if they own one of the engines listed

Wonder Fenlander hasn’t issued you an NDA dhaglund!

Great write up. I used to have a similar set up, MKIIC GT with aluminium floor with Yamaha 25D, short shaft. What an engine, simplicity by design, robustly built, bit like Tohatsu, instant torque. 4-strokes, I know it’s the way forward, but they are lardy, and no instant acceleration compared to 2-stroke.
