Tiller control
Hi
I've been told of a friend of a friend that is selling a 4.5m inflatable not 100% if its a rib or a sib as i have not viewed it yet. Before I get too serious, it can take up to a 50hp I'm a bit concerned that I might struggle to find a 50 which has a tiller. Would this be a problem?
Any advise great fully recieved
Jay

Holes bay marine seemed to have a few good engines when i went in there the other day. Holes Bay Marine used stock
Theres plenty of tillers out and about! If your going for something like a 50hp with pull start, they can be a bit heavy to start compared to small engines but you soon get used to it.

Zapcats do tiller control 50 on a weekly basis!
50 with tiller is maybe not as big a problem as "do you like spinach for breakfast?"

The 50 on my thundercats fine for me with steering even with a damper, its fine tilting & starting but if it decides it doesnt want to start after 6 pulls you need a break!

Knew a guy running an 18' RIB as a dive boat; he had a Honda 90 with tiller steering.

Why not go for two x 25hp? At least you won't need an aux!

My 40hp came as a pull start. It wasn't run very long like that before a starter motor was installed and the battery connected. Now I can't stand trying to pull start and like to hit the starter button. Plus if the boat is loaded with gear in pitching seas, it is kinda dangerous to stand up and pull hard on a rope.
Tillers are great if space is an issue. IE: boats used to haul scuba gear. For throwing one or two people in and going for a cruise I would much prefer having a helm.

It does have a connecting rod for steering both engines from one. I couldn't see if gears or throttles were connected.
I haven't used the boat, I've simply seen it moored in Poole and seen it out in use. Strangely when I saw it in use they had one engine raised and were running on just one and still planned easily with two adults and dog on board. They've got lots of fuel reserves so obviously planning going long distances! Alderney?

Engines connected with a bar as per twin steering on a wheel .
Modify the tiler on one to take auxiliary throttle cable(s), connect same to the other engine.
If it's a modern engine with tiller gearshift ditto, if not, you just manoever with the engine nearest you's gearshift and leave the other in neutral / switched off.
Barrus (I think) used to sell something called T.E.S.T. but as google removes the dots finding it is a pain.....

Seem to remember the early RNLI ,, C class lifeboats ,
based on a zodiac grand raid 17 ft inflatable which was powered by 2 x 40 hp outboards.
seperate units but they needed 2 crew to operate each engine gear lever (though each lever did have a longer extension rod to the front of the engine with a large knob on )
Although they did have a steering linkage-bar think it was the later ones that had the combined throttle / gear set up which may have been a joint effort between rnli & Barrus ,
trying to work out what T.e.s.t stands for .
Pic from an old Barrus ad with a C class .talk about having an arm like Popeye lol.

2 x 25 HP Does not equal a single 50 HP, the combo looks very nice and eyecatching, the only small issues to worry about are: needs doube fuel, oil, maintenance, spare parts and tech headaches.
Happy Boating
