Tohatsu 50 eptol (non DI) opinions?

Greetings ribnetters!

Recently offered a Tohatsu 50 eptol at around £2700 - I have heard they use these in zapcat racing and are pretty solid - does anyone have an opinion as to whether these are a good idea?

I have just bought a 70hp Tohatsu, but can't yet tell you about how good it is because its sitting in the garage.

I have heard however that, as a result of their simplicity they are robust and reliable, spare parts are easy to get and generally cheaper than other outboard brands (although that doesn't seem to be the case with the control box...£385!!! ) and Tohatsu UK are very helpful etc.

A wise man who can be seen around these parts and goes by the name of Pete7 (we are not worthy) told me that their weak point is the coils. These however are cheap and easy to replace!

Hi George

Tohatsu are old tried and tested technology, this is why they are considered reliable engines, i,ve said this on a different thread, but think about where your going to get the Tohatsu serviced or warranty work carried out on it, make sure you have a reliable dealer/service agent close to you as suddenly your bargain brand new engine is going to start costing you money as your going to have to tow your boat to the dealers, for me that meant Soton.

George,

Buzzard marine is about 2 miles from my home. My dad bought a Beta engine for our saily boat from them and they were very helpful.

Then you really have no worries, if it goes wrong you can easilly get it looked at and easilly serviced locally, IMHO the tohatsu will do everything any other engine will do.
