Tohatsu 5hp 4 stroke problem

Hi, I have a Tohatsu 5hp 4 stroke that starts and runs well off the internal tank and starts off an external tank but when running off an external tank, when I open the throttle it starts to die. Any ideas what could be happening there?

Main jet needs a clean or float/needle issue

Assuming the fuel pump diaphragm and vacuum pipe are ok and it's working you must be pulling air into the line. Does the motor recover while you are squeezing the primer bulb? Can you test using somebody else's tank?

I assume there is a switch to move from internal to external tank. Have you checked it’s engaging to switch the feed. If not you have basically turned the fuel off

RIBase
Some tanks have a filter on the pickup pipe in the tank which might be blocked.
Fuel line might be collapsing if it’s an old one
