Tohatsu 6.6m Rib Max Engine Size

I have a tohatsu 6.6m rib. It currently has a Mariner 115hp four stroke on the back. It goes well with a couple of people on board, but is underpowered with more people and for water skiing etc. I have tried to find out more about the rib online but without much success. I have a few questions:

Does anyone own one of these?

What engine do you have on it and how does it perform?

What is the max horsepower/weight of engine that can be put on?

I’m thinking of either 150 or 175 but no idea if what difference that will make and if it’s safe to do so.

Thanks!

Try getting in contact with Tohatsu, failing that there should be a plate listing all info usually on transom.

Hi Mickter,
I will contact them, thank you. I have looked all over the boat for a plate and can’t find one anywhere?!

IIRC these were built by Porters/Solent RIBs. Bad decks were an issue back then - you might be lucky. They were a marketing gig - like Honda inflatables. A 6.5m should be good for at least 150hp, unless it's rotten, in which case you're in trouble...

Hi Willk, thanks for the response. We have had the boat for a couple of years now and as far as I’m aware the deck seems to be solid . I looked at another before this one and it like a trampoline! Thanks for the advice on engine size, I think 150 might be the budget limit as well as hp limit . Cheers

Hi Ben,
We've had a Tohatsu RIB for over 10 years now and very solid. Bought new from https://www.fairweathermarine.co.uk/ - if you need more info. Yamaha 100 has proved adequate for all our needs.
Regards,
Mike

Thanks Mike. I will contact them and see what information they have. Is it the 6.6m one that you have?
