Sounds like fuel starvation. Fuel pump rebuild kits are fairly inexpensive. You could try starting engine, then removing fuel pump from engine block, then squeeze the fuel bulb. If fuel comes out of the diaphragm - then renew. I tend to renew anyway after a couple of years for peace of mind.

Also look at the primer bulb itself. The internal diaphragm may have collapsed. If renewing, go for a decent make such as Quicksilver.

Also look at butterfly valve (behind airbox cover). The choke operates this valve and my own one seized, so I know they can fail.

I had a Tohatsu 60hp that would die at full throttle. Try pumping the fuel bulb. If it picks up then it is a fuel problem. I had two problems. The first was a crack in the casing of the small plastic fuel filter that is under the cowl on the inlet to the engine. The second issue was with the fuel pump. I had this replaced and after that I never had any problems. Also you should make sure all the carbs are clean. From what I have been told 9 times out of 10 the issue will be fuel. The engines are generally uncomplicated and simple.

Best of luck

Nick

Fuel bowls must be starved, so could be sticky float valve. Wouldn't bother with carb cleaner, this is a carb strip down job. Easy enough job. Take your time, be thorough, use brake cleaner or carb cleaner. Dry and reassemble.

As you remove carbs, drain the fuel bowls and check for contaminants. Use a cotton bud on the jets, etc. Ensure you don't adjust fuel mixture pilot screws. If you do remove to clean, count the turns. Normally 1½ turns out from lightly seated
