Tohatsu 9.8 2 Stroke Overheating on Load

Hi. Recent to me Tohatsu 9.8 2 stroke appears to overheat when pushed. It’s fine at low revs. Was engine to a yacht tender previously. So I expect infrequent use but probably minimum maintenance. I’m thinking this could be a thermostat issue and/or blocked waterways.
Are there any guides on this available? I can’t find any or anything 2 stroke on YouTube. I’m a keen novice, changed impellers and basic servicing. Is this job beyond me and should I be asking a professional?
Thanks. Matt

That's a nuisance but hopefully you have caught it in time. I guess as it is fine at slower speeds and I assume with a good tell tale at idle you are discounting the impeller? To be honest I'm a simple things first kinda guy so would inspect/change that first.

However in truth it's probably more likely to be something above that such as stat or waterways. On the 9.8 the stat is behind the head so you need to pull the head off to check which also gives you access to that area of waterways. Also you can pull off the exhaust plate (items 12/13 in linked diagram) which gives you further waterways to check/prod.

So just head gasket, two exhaust plate gaskets and a stat to buy.

This job is straightforward as far as it goes with minimal tools required. As long as you remove all the bolts with care to avoid snapping then you should have no problems.

Parts diagram here gives a good idea how it all fits together...

I'd like to get a maintenance manual for mine, ideally hard copy, but so far no luck.

Hi Matt, if you've changed the impeller and serviced it, I see no reason why you shouldn't be able to change the thermostat.
I've never done it myself, but I will be doing so at the end of the season when I intend to do a full service incl the thermostat.
I read this a few weeks ago and saved the link for my future reference:-

Sorry mods, I know it's on the other channel! Interestingly nobody replied to what I thought was a good post!

I'm sure a couple of more experienced members will add their words of expertise shortly.

Edit - see Fenlander just has!

Cross linking never a problem Steve. That's a nice guide with its clear images.

Do you mean this manual David, or a more comprehensive one:-

I don't have a Google account to look at that but I have the operators manual which includes basic servicing however I'd like the one with full specs, torques and strip downs etc.

Try this link (you may have to copy and paste it):-

If I can remember where I downloaded the pdf from I'll post it on here.

Ahh thanks got that now. It's a weird one isn't it. Loads of very useful data but skips whole chunks of how-to on some models.
