Tohatsu 9.8 Hydrofoil

Hello All,
Joined earlier today and firstly wanted to say hi, and secondly ask some advice.

I have recently bought a Tohatsu 9.8 2 stroke short shaft and am thinking of adding a set of hydrofoils. If anybody has any pointers I'd be very grateful!

Hi, I had the Zodiac version of your boat many years ago and ran it with a 9.9 2 stroke Yamaha. TBH, I cant see any need for hydrofoils, your 9.8 is pretty much the max engine for the hull. Having said that, they wont do any harm and may help you plane if you have marginal weight on board.

Mine would plane with 2 big adults and a couple of kids on board, loved the fact that I could fold it up and stick it away in the garage.

Yeah it's a great little boat, I bought it for the exact reasons your saying, plus don't really want to fill the driveway with a trailer.

I had 3 adults and the dog on board yesterday and couldn't get it on the plane and thought the hydrofoil might help? I've also read that they can increase efficiency.

I had them on a 8hp buy couldn't say if they worked or not as I never used it without them, I think you are asking a bit much with 3 adults, I have the same engine and have thought about fitting these, if you do fit them please report back

I'll certainly let you know if I do! Just not sure which manufacturer to go for.

That's too much load for a 9.8hp (I have one). The hydrofoils (dolefins) are a waste of your time and money (I have some). Either carry less load, or get a 15hp

I have two of them, agree with Willk 2 people and a dog is probably your max and you would still need to shift weight to the bow to get it on the plane. Keep the dog but loose a person!!!!

I'm also not too sure about the best prop to run on the engine.....that said the current prop is in reasonable shape.

Same again - the 9.8 is a forum favourite but 1 1/2 (light) people is where it's at - on my 3.4m Zodiac it needed major weight shifting (ie hanging over the bow for dear life) to plane with 2 adults (total 20 stone) + 2 kids (total 10 stone).

Me and one kid (total 18 stone or so) was ideal.

The standard factory prop is usually ideal 99% of the time on these small SIB's/engine combo's.
