Tohatsu 9.8 maintenance

I bought a new Tohatsu 9.8 two stroke engine from an offshore seller back in 2012

The engine has been used every year on my Zodiac dinghy while on holidays.

So the total hours on this engine are probably well under 200 in twelve years.

Feel free to tell me off now but,

l have to admit l haven't really kept up with the maintenance schedule. l have changed the transmission oil (at the bottom of the leg) a couple of times, and l've replaced the spark plugs once. l've also used my grease gun from time to time on the pivot grease nipple.
l've always flushed the engine after running in salt water and run it dry of fuel at the end of each holiday.

The last time l used the engine was on Windermere last year and it started first time, which was great because there were about ten people watching us launch off the jetty at Ferry Nab.

l think l had better do a full service before this season.

So if l change the gearbox oil, the spark plugs, grease the main pivot, check the cables and recoil unit, what else should l be doing to it.

Fit a new impeller? Will do, if it's overdue. l'll
add it to the list of spares to order.

Yep the impeller is the most important to do. Beyond that have a look at anode condition, check or replace the fuel filter and I'd pop the prop off and lubricate the splines with water resistant grease. The book says to strip and clean the carb every 200hrs but if it starts and runs well you might want to leave alone. You may have a filter on the end of the tank pickup you might want to inspect.

In truth super easy outboards to maintain.
