Volvo Penta D6 shoehorned into a Pacific 22

Hello there, its been a while as the boat has been out the water for a while.

It all started a fair few years ago when we picked up an ex MOD Police Pac 22 from Babcock Disposals. After a bit of digging and help from Mermaid Marine it turns out the boat was fitted with the 200hp variant of the Turbo 4 engine. To start with we struggled to get over 26.5 kts at the standard 2600rpm so the fuel pump was tweeked increasing the revs to 3000rpm and speed was increased to 29.5kts.

This still wasnt fast enough for the brother so about a year or so later he purchased a recon DPR drive with ratio 1:36 and a set of GR9 props from Coastal Rides. After much head scratching and machining we managed to graft the DPR drive onto the back of the boat without cutting the transom and also utilising the standard Stern Powr mounting plate and tilt rams as can be seen in the picture below

Speed was increased to just shy of 40kts at 3000rpm with the Turbo 4 and about 7kts on tickover!!!

Things still wern't fast enough so a plan was hatched to stuff a D6 into the old girl after Andy was talking to Paul at Coastal rides when he was told they had a 350hp D6 engine that had been swamped in stock.

A couple of years down the line and its finally in the original engine bay and running with the addition of 2 170L plastic fuel tanks up forward to keep her well fed.

here's some pics and a video

Good work on matching the Volvo drive to the Sternpower and an amazing increase in speed because of it - almost unbelievable!

So, have you put it on the water and frightened yourselves yet?

Not been in the water yet with the Volvo, There are still some bits to sort before she is ready.
There are still a couple of areas of the deck to strengthen, some rot to be cut out the engine box and she still has to be float tested before the decks are sealed down.
Space is at a premium on the deck with the new console so we also still need to fabricate a couple of jocky seats.
We hope to have her back in the water before the end of the season.

Our biggest concern is we have added a fair bit of weight with the larger engine, stern drive and 2 x 170L fuel tanks. So when we stick her in for a float test to check for leaks before sticking the deck down we will need to simulate her loaded with fuel to ensure she still sits ok.

Weight should be fine but we recon we have added approx 500kg to the overall loaded weight of the boat.

Will keep the pictures coming as we progress and we cant wait to see what she will do flat out with an extra 500rpm. We have been told the D6 can be mapped to rev to 4000rpm but I think that will be for another day once the whole setup is proven.
