waste of time + money or not?
I have got in touch with a guy who is connected with some RYA training centers. He says he has come of there engine which have broken while o exercises. Apparently these engines are taken straight off the boat and put into dry storage to be fixed. Over time they accumulate and he has the job of selling some off.
He has offered me a 2006 mariner efi 40hp for only £300, because they just need to get rid of them. It is suspected that some dirt made its way past the filter and blocked up one of the injectors, but it is not certain. Am I stupid to take a risk? The concern I do have is that because the engines are taken straight off (no flushing) then stored, the salt water inside will just completely annihilate the head, or am a wrong?

For £300 its a no brainer.
If its more serious and not economical to repair then eBay it.
You can't lose IMO.

Freston Junior, how does he propose to sell this engine to you? Are you calling to collect it and give him the cash or is he sending it to you - after you pay him?

First response is there is a training centre in the area that you gave me. They are a RYA credited training centre and not actually the RYA. This could account for the use of mariners

My gut feeling would always be tainted with mistrust, I would have a deal but collect it, in my long dealings with this sort of seller I have always found other gear at there premises that I could also incorporate into the deal and depending on where you live will only take a day out of your life, you may meet a good contact for more equipment

Whisper has a point. Is he the same guy who trys to sell you a engine. But he has no time for you to collect and he will send it free of charge to wherever you want.
Can't remember his name. Anyone?

No, he said you can collect, but we have palleted some. He is charging an additional charge of £45.
He just seems very, very genuine. Too genuine to be fake...
