Hi Pete,

Is there a story attached to that little snippet about DJL. If so any chance of posting a link. I would like to read it.

Regards Nick R.

Nick, I wasn't there (thank god ) so can't add much detail, but on the Sunday a group who cruised down from the Solent to Weymouth found some very rough seas, some decided to stay, but DJL and a couple of others pressed on home arriving exhausted but safe.

There certainly is a story attached!

Pete, it was 2002.

Here on RIBnet there are a few words here and some pictures here.
Also, I'm slowly getting round to PDFing all of BIBOA's back issues of Riblines so the issue with another account of the 2002 BIBOA Weymouth cruise will soon be available for download here.

The 2005 BIBOA Weymouth cruise video can be downloaded here, but be warned, it's 180MB.

I agree with this comment.

Love my 4 stroke but its very heavy. Cheaper on fuel and probably cost the same second hand. But if you want out and out performance the Yam 50 2 stroke has to be the ultimate. Get one with PTT and your laughing.

Oops, wrong issue! It was the February 2003 issue, and I've uploaded it now. You can find it here.

My vote for Honda 50. 93kg versus 86 kg for Yam 2 stroke. Add in the extra fuel for the two stroke and oil and its a wash. I burn 6-7 litres per hour at 4600 rpm giving me about 30 mph on a 4.5m aluminum rib. Can't beat that fuel economy!!. Expect the Yam to burn 40% more. Top speed at 39 mph @ 6000 rpm.

However it the quietness and lack of smoke of a four stroke. I don't know why old technology two strokes sell, except they are cheaper. Soon to be banned in North America any ways.
I also think the Honda is the best looking engine and has a great warranty which you will never need. Only downside is lack of EFI versus Yam and Suzuki 50's and an issue around leaving old gas in it for an extended period and clooging the carb's.

Having just purchased a new honda the dealer told me that 2 strokes of any make will not be available after next year.
Not sure how that will change second hand values , but they were selling new mariners at big discounts

[QUOTE=Downhilldai;134143] Cheap, yes but Standard shaft. Seariders run Longshafts.

How long is long? I am looking for an engine for a 98 SR4. I'm seeing ads for 16 inch shafts which are obviously too short and other ads for used 20 inch short shaft engines. Is a 20 inch shaft engine correct for this boat? Thanks for any advice.

20-21 inch shaft length is right for an SR4. If you're unsure measure from the inside top of the clamp to the anti-cavitation plate(a) (in pic) and then measure from your transom to the bottom of your hull(b). The number for (a) should be the same or an inch less than the number for (b).

Total BS, not one word is true, not one. you some kinda salesman.

the best 50 is the OMC Mod50 or CC, rip your transom off on the first ride.

I fitted a tohatsu 50 (3cyl) to my SR4 and it's great. PT&T longshaft approx 89KG so doesn't make boat too stern heavy. Std prop pitch seemed ideally matched with top revs of 5600-5800. Great engine, smooth with loads of torque and quieter than my old Suzuki DT25 3cyl. Also comes with tacho and trim guages.

As a few folks have mentioned, 2-strokes can't be imported into UK after Dec 2006 so prices have actaully gone up on a lot of 2-strokes. I believe the dealers are allowed to sell any left over stock after 2006, just not import any new ones. I also heard this didn't apply to commerical use?

Any updates on 50hp engines?

The early 90s 3cyl Yam 30 on my Searider is a bit grumpy at the moment. Seems to have dropped down to 2 or maybe 1 cylinder. It's with the dealer and they're trying to sort it.

If it appears to be on its last legs what are my best options in 2008?

I really like the 30 and if it can be made to work then great. If not, then a 50hp 3cyl yam would be preferable but haven't seen any for sale used for a while.

That just leaves new.

Any suggestions?

This will put the cat amongst the pigeons so-to-speak. The Yamaha 3 cylinder 2-stroke is a great engine, but finding one in decent condition is no easy task. Yes they come on Ebay and Boats and Outboards - but most look like they have seen better days.

What could be an option is to pick up a decent Yamaha 40hp and upgrade it to 50hp. They use the same block (693cc), but the exhaust manifold and carbs are a 1/4'' smaller.

Incidentally - there's was a Yamaha 50hp (long shaft) at www.seaandshore.co.uk - ask for Ewen.
