Just going by cowl it could easily be around mid '80s to mid '90s. I had a Yamaha 25D with exactly the same design and decals (digital-style hp number decals) and it was 1986. I also had a Yamaha 40hp (1995) and although the number style is the same the side decals changed to a simpler design.

The age is normally on a black sticker on the port side of the outboard bracket, it will have a model number and on the bottom right of the sticker it will have a letter, this is the letter which tells you the age...

However if this sticker isn't on there I'm not sure if the age will be anywhere else on the outboard.

Do you have a serial number on the rib? the last two numbers normally tell you the age and that could be an indication if it's the original engine.

Like this.

The 'T' tells you it's a 1995 engine but, like every other second-hand (sorry, 'pre-owned') engine, it had only done 200 hours when I bought it, according to the seller!
Joking aside, it's in fabulous condition and being one of the three cylinder Yamahas, it's a bulletproof piece of engineering excellence. I hope.

What might be more help is a pic of the 'leccy connector inside the engine.

If push comes to shove A few pics of the inside of the engine might help - I am running a Merc off my Yam 703..... The electrics aren't spectacularly different in the world of 2- stroke.

I suspect a rewire would be pretty simple, but ask me again when I am little clearer headed.

There should be one of these discs somewhere on the power head with a 6 digit number on.

There should also be a 3 digit model number that will appear on a number of cast components. Something like '6H1'

If you can find these two, then I can tell you the year.
