Whats required to rig a verado 250

Hi,
I have got the chance of a used 250hp 2006 verado but it is the bare motor ...no rigging or guages .......I already have a seastar hydraulic steering system ......just wondering what gauges, looms....other stuff i would need and rough guide prices for such

250 HP on a 5.4m SR...

I think you'd be horrified at the cost of the parts that you'll need. I would advise you to speak to your local Verado dealer and get a quote for everything, but sit down before asking!

Seconded, Smartcraft gauges when not bought as part of a engine package are not cheap + cables, leads, helm control and batteries. £1k ish.

95% of used outboards are sold that way in the USA. It may appear to be a good deal but unless you boat is already rigged to match the engine it is usually not.

Just to give you an idea, prices from Barrus for the following:
System monitor £230.16
Tacho/speedo £345
Tacho £297

And you still have to buy the loom ( over 300quid) and a prop.

Aparently the way Verados are going to be supplied in the not to distant future is the dealer will get a 'Blank' Verado and will then programme it to the necessary Horsepower from 200HP upto 400HP.

And "apparently" your talking bollix, a 200hp is a 4 cylinder, and a 225 and up is a 6, must be a special kind of pc that your using, numpty!

I thought the steering was integrated with Verados ?

as it is on mine, or can you get external fits for it ? and also .. part of the pleasure of this engine is thats its fly by wire, so you need the mercury throttle and shift mechanism to get these functions (if it cant be controlled any other way ?).. and IMHO once tried ... its hard to go back to any thing else

thanks for your replies ....no it is not stolen ...I also found out that it is a factory reconditioned one. it was temptingly cheap.....i understand that the loom...guauges controls etc all have to be matched.

one side of me says go for it and the other says walk away .....get an optimax

Power steering pump and hoses (the ram is on the motor already)

fly by wire control

instruments
you'll still need a dealer computer to get the thing working!

Limey Linda - The Verado is sold with all of the above new, and the fly by wire controls and power steering are unique I think.

OK so maybe I was 25HP out, it would certainly make sense from a manufacturing perspective.

Let face it if a 225 could be detuned to provide 200HP easily enough then why not? and as I said this was something that may be happening "in future" I did not say it was hapenning now.

Besides I would have thought anyone who calls himself Dirk Diggler on an open forum clearly would want the BIGGEST engine possible to make up for his small uhhh.. ego?

I could see the logic there give or take a few tens of horses, but 225-400??? That wouuld result in one helluva heavy 225 horse engine.......

Bear in mind this manufacturing efficiency has been kicking around since the '60s on everything from 1.5hp up - only difference being back then you had to either tweak the spark, or mechanically stop the throttle about 3/4 of the way open. (and in the age of electronic ignition tweak the trip levels a bit so it goes into "limp - home mode" before it actually became the next HP up

)

Nowadays, with fly-by-wire, the throttle is electroniocally controlled so it;s just down to writing the software. I could see legal implictations with the dealer programing the horsepower, especiually if the vehicle emissions regs regarding OEMs' overall output are similar to those for outboards.
