Yamaha 115hp Block Resealing

Hi guys,

just want to get a few opinions on the following advert for a 115hp Yam 4 stroke if possible, this is the advert:

"Yamaha 115hp, for sale looking for offers for either parts or the complete engine. Starts and runs no problems but seems the water is getting in to the oil from the water jacket. Engineer says the block is fine just needs re sealing. Engineer also says would be fine to keep using but changing changing/topping up the oil!

Engine & Gear box and let in great condition!

We have the controls available either included for the right price or will sell separately. Wheel, throttle and engine gages all working with no problems "

They would like £800 for it, would this make sense just having to reseal the block or do you think there will be a further issue?

Blocks dont start leaking water into the oil in a location that you can reseal easily. Its usually due to corrosion on the mating surfaces or a hole rotted through or a crack somewhere. Very unlikely it can just be revealed successfully. The other issue is if theres saltwater got in all the cast or steel surfaces will end up red rust which flakes off & causes grit to form in the sump which quickly destroys the engine. It's cheap but probably only good for spares especially if it's been ran in saltwater.

It could be as simple as a gasket, but it could be as serious as beamishken described also. There's no way to know for certain without breaking it down so 800 is a bit risky. I certainly wouldn't just run with it as-is, while it has an oil dilution issue.

Yamaha 115hp for £800 is cheap for a reason. If it was just the water jacket gasket, they’d have repaired it themselves. Any engineer that says it’s fine to run but keep swapping out the oil sounds like a bodge.

The leg and lower gearbox alone is £500 if you fancy taking a punt.

Have a look at this one state-side. The water jacket cover quite a large area as it’s 4-cylinder, and this one is clean, probably fresh water.

Bill Higham has a couple for sale, but in XL shaft.
