Steve just looking at your tiller it's the new style of the last few years. Not sure if you've used one but many older Mercury/Mariners has the gears actually as part of twisting the throttle. So the first movement of the throttle engaged gear... and the same the other way for reverse.

A crafty system and with a well set up OB it was great... but you couldn't rev the engine out of gear if clearing a bit of a misfire unless you took the cowl off and if your pickup from idle was erratic a total nightmare.

I can see why it could be problematic.

I have gone with the Mariner 25hp 2 stroke and will upgrade to a 30 rather than this 4 stroke same weight but 10hp more
