Yamaha 15hp enduro cooling issues

Hi all,

Asking for a friend...he bought a 15hp Yamaha Enduro last week for his SIB; we took it out on Friday for the first time. It got out of the harbour fine but as soon as we began to speed up it would intermittently stop pumping water...then the engine would cut out (is there a thermostat cut off?). We pulled the cooling hose off and cleaned out the jet....started fine and pumped water fine. After another 10 minutes, the same thing happened...and again, and again for the next 2 hours.

Any thoughts on what's wrong with it? Is it just full of gunk in the cooling system.

Thanks for any help.

Sounds like the water jacket is full of salt residue id remove the stat for a look & if it looked bad then id probably run it in an acidic solution to clean the passages

Correct when you say salt residue, but not necessarily sea salt (sodium chloride is soluble), probably a non-soluble salt such as aluminium hydroxide. Any chemists here who are also RIB owners?

I'd want a look at the impeller in case it's on it's way out. In my experience - salt residue is quite difficult to clear, even running Salt Away or white vinegar solution. Could be there's sacrificial anodes on this engine that just haven't been changed or they've simply disintegrated. What about the state of the thermostat too?

If you go down the removing exhaust water jacket and cylinder head route - then have the gaskets available and go easy on the head bolts. If you have access to a heat induction bolt tool, even better, as bolts are notorious for breaking, plus copious amounts of penetrating release.

There's a torque level for tightening and a sequence from the middle of the head out. Don't use power tools or you're on a road to misery.

Davie on here knows Yamaha engines inside out so can advise, especially regards Enduro models. You'll need the model number for correct identification and sourcing parts.

Some interesting videos on Dangar Marine's site on cleaning water passages and changing cylinder head gasket, etc.

I'd agree with Spartacus, definitely worth investigating and changing the impeller, but I've just had some very góod results cleaning the cooling system of my 150HPDI using Rydlyme. Got a load of solids out of it, all the salt deposits are gone and it looks like new now. Will post some photos later today

Thanks all. Sounds like it might be a job for a mechanic rather than me. Anyone got a recommendation for an outboard mechanic around London? Ideally North London.

Cheers

It is not hard to do at all. I did mine the other day on a 15 hp yam. See the pic below of how it was clagged up.

All you need is a 10 mm spanner and some time. It is very satisfying once done
