Yamaha 25 2stroke crossed battery wires. (HELP)

Hi guys.
So I have a yamaha 25 2 stroke 1998 engine and took the battery out yesterday to charge it.
When I I reconnected last night I connected the polarities in reverse ( tried doing a day time job at night) and since then the engine doesn't seem to be producing a strong electric current. When connecting the battery the wires melted so I had to replace them but when I attach the engine wires straight to the navigation lights they don't seem to be as bright as they were before. Any suggestions to what the issue might be?

Start with a multimeter and check battery and the voltage at various places (like at the lights).

Thanks for the response guys. After replacing all the wiring turns out it was indeed the rectifier. Ordered a new one from Yamaha for 120 euro installed.
