Yamaha 30hp EFI....advice please!
I am on the verge of buying a new 4.2 Rib Yam 30hp EFI package, and would appreciate any advice or experience of using similar.
The engine is brand new, but i would like to hear of any experience of how this engine will perform with a 4.2 Rib. I plan to pull my son on ski's amoungst other things but i am concerned that it might be underpowered, or am i worrying over nothing as in fact this engine will get on the plane with ease!
I am aware of Yamaha's build quality, performance and reliability as i own a smaller one, but would welcome any comments on the package.
Cheers

What sort of rib ? 30 f/s is going to be a bit gutless tbh especially if you plan to Ski and will have to work bloody hard to get up. i had a zodiac pro 420 thing with a Yam 40 two stroke and pretty flighty 32 knots but would outrun rollers if reqd
But it will do the job and be frugal with fuel usage. but really need to know what Rib you intend to purchase

I'd say you need a 40..at least....I managed to ski behind my 4m with a 50....but I was in form and lighter!...I also did behind 200 which was just scary.....
30 will make things very very hard going....

Thanks for the advice fellas. My other option is a Honda BF50 4 stroke instead of the Yam 30 4 stroke, on the same 4.2 rib. There is only 4kg difference in weight so the Honda is a real contender, although the Yam 30 will hold its value better for resale purpose's. My head want's the Honda but my wallet want's the Yam........as there will be an extra £1200 price tag to buy the Honda. Ive got a headache....which one????

Thanks for your opinion Matt. Will it still be gutless even though its a brand new Yam?
Ive been told the Yam 30 will perform as well as a suzi or mercury '40'

Presumably that was a Yam dealer who told you that? If its actually putting out the same power as a 40 then they would call it a 40 and charge more! Personally I'd consider walking away from a dealer who tried to BS like that.

Hi SPR
I plan to pull my son on ski's, general doughnutting, sea fishing etc. Would you advise the Yam 30 on a 4.2 rib for skiing?
Any advise greatly appreciated

Doughnutting in the limits of the rings ! i think it be ok,
i think you get 25-30 Knots with 30 HP with 1 up in it...if you can stretch buy bigger engine -
Dave from Clydeoutboards are Honda Dealers - doing good prices.
ski-ing is another matter, the more power the better...but very hard to do in sea ! flat calm conditions is what you need for Ski-ing...
S.

Size/weight/skill of the skier also make a huge difference. Used to ski easily with a 35hp Chrysler as a lad & two skiers up with a 50 hp hardboats @ 14 ft. Sadly I now need 100plus hp to get going !!
You can't have too much power to get the skier out plus prop makes a big difference. Once your skiers up just throttle back !! I used to be almost able to stop the boat on mono on a sharp corner.

great comments and info
Me thinkin the £1200 difference for the 50 is maybe not worth it as will be skiing at sea and flat calm as common as good weather!!
The 30 is winning the race now me thinks

Not sure how the 30 is winning the race ? The 30 wont have enough grunt to pull a skier, it will just about pull a junior on a ring, but it wont tow an adult.
I love Yamaha's, all of my outboards are Yam's, but the fact is, the person selling the rib is talking rubbish, a 30 Yam is not as powerful as a 40 Merc etc The rig you are looking at will be at least twice the weight, if not more.
I bought a Honwave 4m last year and stuck a 25hp 2 stroke Yam on it, all very lightweight and great fun. It would tow my kid on a single ring or a kneeboard, but not a chance on skis or a wakeboard. The rig you are looking at will be at least twice the weight, if not more. It will be great as a 20kt leisure boat for nice days with a couple of people on board, but its not a ski machine even with just 2 up and a 3rd behind.
It doesn't matter how much cheaper the Yam is, if it doesn't do the job you want its not worth it !
I realise this is not what you want to hear, but keep looking till you find a rig that suits your needs and your pocket, its the cheapest solution in the end.

The 30 will NOT do it, it will be gutless and boring no matter if it is new or old. you will be wishing you put a 40 on it. Simples

Spend the extra and get the 50....it'll make the difference between thinking you wish you had got more power and actually enjoying the boat...the Hondas are great engines....

well....it looks like the pendulum has swung in favor of the Honda BF50, based on all the words of wisdom offered by experienced heads.
I will just have to dig very deep to fund the £1200 difference, im sure it will be worth it.........omg

You won't regret the extra power. As long as the boats rated for it, maximum power = maximum fun !!
You'll be surprised how much easier it is to get up when skiing with the extra plus mono has a lot of bite.

Good one..the new 50 Honda by all accounts is about 97 kg dry compared to my 50 yam at 115 kg.!
I think you'll love it....
And by buying new you have 5/6 years of warranty ...but I doubt you'll need it.
