Yamaha Beto V4 130 - Problem

My outboard has suddenly developed a nasty rattle! Was out yesterday on the Forth, brother was driving and we were doing around 38 knots, WOT, trimmed right out, he slowed down to a stop but never trimmed the engine back down, but it was still low enough to be pumping water, prop still under the water etc, trimmed it right back down, and it stalled, started up again right away but it sounded rough, with a strange rattle sound every few seconds. Motored back into the marina but with a definite drop in power. Engine was given a full service 5 months ago and given a clean bill of health then, has done around 30 hours since and never any problems. Has been left with the company who serviced it at the marina to have a look at it but I feel like I have a huge bill coming! Any ideas chaps?

was it knocking out of gear?

any difference with more/less revs?

any smell of fuel when it cut?

if you still have the motor handy i'd check compression to start.

cheers

was it knocking out of gear? - No

any difference with more/less revs? - Slightly more noise with higher revs

any smell of fuel when it cut? - No smell of fuel when it cut out.

if you still have the motor handy i'd check compression to start. - It's down at the marina but if they dont get round to looking at it in the next few days I'll pop down and check that myself.

cheers

it might be a gearbox problem if it stops out of gear. go spin the prop/check for anything loose.

keep us updated.

cheers

Prop and gearbox are fine, sounds like it may be big end.

Keep us updated as I know of some part from a Submerged Yam 115 V4 which would fit. May get it back to life dependant on what's needed

Bad news today about my engine, it chucked a piston and the engine block is damaged beyond repair. So, kinda gutted! Thinking, new engine and sell the Yam for spares or repair, the rest of it is all good. What do you think I could get for it?

Break it up into bits and sell it yourself. Best bet if you can.

Got one of my customers wanting to look at it first as he's re-built a few outboards and engines in his time, and always says anything can be fixed. Will need a new engine block, piston etc. it got us back in from 3 miles out so it still runs

I agree break it for spares and you may get a good return towards it's replacement.

Not got the time or the skills to do this. Will sell the whole outboard for £500 if anybody wants it come and remove it from my rhib.
