Next issue, driveshaft very shiny in the middle, is there a bearing or bushing up there that's needs replacing , looks like it'll be a pain to get at?

i would service the water pump now its off for what it costs the shiny bit on the shaft i think is just a guide where it comes down the leg, the shaft will twist a bit under load as do all shafts and will touch the guide i have had a look at my Suzuki service manual and no bearing that i can see on mine but its not far up to shine a torch and have a look if it were a bearing it would have to be tight on the shaft to work, also have a look at at gear oil while off doesn't sound like the mechanic has done a through service hope you haven't done any serious damage. some one will be along with more knowledge that me to advise.

good luck

Going to check compression first myself before approaching dealer, if there's damage I'll be expecting help!

That's true as he said he checked that as well, there is a sleeve or bushing up there from what I could see yesterday evening

Hoping Davie can sort me out with parts ;-)

Cheers

Looking at the stat & its housing I wonder what the rest of the waterways are like? I've never used a flushing agent of any sort but is there anything out there that might help?

The drive-shaft looks a tad rusty. Considering the engine was serviced, I'm struggling to see why the mechanic didn't clean off the surface rust and lightly lube it. That's pretty poor. And the thermostat, that's beyond a joke. Send him the thermostat, I'd be sending him a horse's head!

Brown stuff that I've flushed out looks very similar to the crust you get of an old style element, maybe descaler would be the job?

i think if it were me i would stop and go back to where you bought it, its been a poorly maintained engine and the service as the guys have said a disgrace you didn't run it for long before it let you down not acceptable at all, my fear would be its a can of worms and the more you do the less they will help and if its got to be stripped down sheared bolts can be expensive to sort. pee's me off this kind of thing you pay honest money you work hard for just to be ripped off [ i agree horses head] best of luck.

Hadn't realised you'd only bought it in the last few weeks until I looked at some of your other posts.
I agree with Jeff. The more you do the more the seller will try & say you caused the problem. This is something the seller should be sorting out. What warranty were you given?
I don't know what consumer law you have in Eire but would be worth finding out.

Bought privately from a small ads, seller wasn't a crook in fairness, I don't think I have much come back, got a loan of a compression tester today, this evenings test will decide a lot... :-(

In UK consumer law private sale unlikely unless the ad or what the seller said have knowingly misrepresented the condition of the engine. Proving that is the problem.
Good luck with the compression test.

I know. That's why I said 'in UK consumer law'. And in my previous post 'I don't know what consumer law you have in Eire but would be worth finding out'.

Ah, we're very relaxed. If you can find the seller, there's always the chance to give him a wee dig....

PS I'd missed your first post, sry.

Compression test on cold engine
Top =175
Middle =180
Bottom =180

Does those readings seem on the high side? What should they be?
they are well within 10% of each other though ...

Can't say 5 would cause me any concern - although I don't know what Yamaha suggest as the expected figure.
Was it smoke or steam when it happened? Do one or more of the plugs look unusually clean?

Plugs were brand new, all look good, slight tan on the inner white and a bit of carbonising on the tip, ya the smoke was stream as it hissed before I stopped it, anyone know where to find compression figures for yamahas?

Ron

Search on here for outboard service manuals there are some free downloads.or go on eBay I got one for around £6 for a Suzuki 90 on d Isco, from what I have seen on a Yam50hp 125psi is the lowest recommended by Yamaha seen on YouTube getting 150psi
your within the recommended 10%between cylinders see if you can borrow another gauge as a comparison

Cheers
