Yamaha Four Strokes - Hours Recorded?

Dear All,

Just a very quick question. In order to verify the "Hours" on a Yamaha 60 Fourstroke (Around 2002/2003 vintage)

I was just wondering where the hours are actually "stored" in terms of the whole system. Are they stored on the rpm guage/similar or is there an hour meter in the engine that can be interrogated by plugging in the relevant diagnostic equipment?

So basically if you have to buy a new rev counter do the hours go back to zero? or does it get the information from the engine and the old hours come up?

Appreciate that this may be a simple question but I was just wondering!!!

Thanks

CND

Yamaha 4 stroke engine hour verification

Hi, I would also like to know the answers to the above questions as I have heard there can be a difference between the recorded engine hours on RPM/Tach and the hours on the ECU?

I think the answer is to get the hours from the ECU as this the most accurate as its not affected by the key been left on in the ignition position but would like somebody to confirm please

I agree Matt but I want to be 100% certain as I am looking at boats with Yammie 4 stroke engines on them and am considering buying the diagnostics (lead and software) to verify engine hours.

I will pm yam man to see if he can help

Stored on PCM (ecu) . Will need software to read .your be able to read the rpm range at what hours. The answer to your question does the hours from the ecu read when engines is running or ignition turned on . It should be when running

This only applies to the EFI though right ? Older carb modes do not have the facility to plug into if I remember correctly

Thanks Yam Man for helping us. Does the tach/speedo hours work from the ignition key been to the on position regardless of whether the engine is running?

If yes that would explain the difference in the tach hours and ECU hours

Thanks again

Gareth
