Yamaha/Mariner 55/60hp Gearbox problem

Can anyone tell me if there is a trick to getting the gearshift and gears syncronised when putting these gearboxes back on. The shift rod twists to change gears, rather than the push pull ones I'm used to.

Thanks Al, I have now found that the cam in the gearbox is worn out, which is why its not engaging gears properly.
