Yamaha missing serial number

Hi everyone,
I've just acquired what I'm told is a 1999 Yamaha 8hp 2 stroke.
The clamp bracket has been replaced so I don't have the serial number.
Although it has a 8hp hood, I'm wondering if it may be a 6hp and anyway I'll need a serial number when I come to ordering parts.
Does anyone know any way to tell the difference between the 6 and the 8 without the number and if the number is stamped anywhere else on the engine? It seems a little odd if the only ID is a sticker which could be replaced by an unscrupulous person.
Thanks

Trying to add a picture of what may be the engine number but can't do it!
Any suggestions, please?

If it has 6g1 stamped into the carburettor it's an 8. It's on the angle of the flange where the carb meets the reed block. That engine number comes up as a 1984 engine. Put a pic up it will be ocean blue if it's that old.
