Out of interest why Selva or Yamaha? What about all the other engines?. I would'nt put Selva in the same league! most engines are cheaper than Yamaha!

I was told that the selva are yamaha re branded. that's why i was considering one of those two.

so selva aren't that reliable ?

I've never heard of Hidea motors and I don't think that there is a local agent.

any recommendations for other manufacturers?
Honda,Mariner ... ?

Before this turns into a messpit of rumour, I do remember reading a while ago that the 4- stroke Selvas were re- lidded Yams. Easy way to find out - any pics in the brochures with the lids off? Also if Yam have recently introduced a new one, probably worth comparing the Selva with the old model.

Now, in days of yore I think Selva made their own? But that wasn't exactly yesterday!

Just had a quick trawl of the yam & Selva Websites.

I am swaying towards the "paint job" theory - tech numbers & pics are remarkably similar.....

Yep, the Marine branch of Nissan.

Quite highly regarded these days, and from what I gather good customer service too.

I thought the only connection was that Tohatsu are rebadged as Nissan in US!
Not bad bits of kit ether way!

Dejv - my understanding is that Selva and Yamaha 4 strokes are the same under the skin. I think they are also have better market penetration in southern europe than the UK. Whether you will get the same support/warranty etc from Selva may be a different question? It is a little like the difference between a Skoda and an Audi. However whilst Skoda now have widespread market acceptance and reputation - Selva are still just entering the UK market - so do you want to be an early adopter for the Brand? Do you want to risk that when you sell it in 3 yrs time they are still largely an unknown quantity?

The following brands are all "mainstream" in the UK 4stroke outboard market:

Yamaha
Mercury/Mariner
Tohatsu
Honda
Suzuki

Do Etec go as small as 25 HP with their "modern" direct injection 2 stroke stuff? They would also be considered credible - but the traditional weight benefits of 2 stroke won't apply.

For each of those brands I would be comparing price and weight. There isn't really much between most of these in terms of reliability with new engines (and most will be offering 5 yr warranties). The key factor for many people will be who their local dealer is - so if a problem does develop they can get it fixed locally rather than travelling hundreds of miles to the approved service centre.

expensive paint job

:same lump. there was at one time a big difference in price in the UK but Yammie got Selva to raise the prices folowing on from Polwarts comments power to weight ratio wold be a decision factor for me als0 and smell and noise, sorry I mean music and Aroma :clap
