Does yours definitely have glow plugs fitted? I thought most of the UK-spec 6LP motors didn't have them, even though the light on the dash still glows...

I assumed mine had glow plugs because of the dash light, but it doesn't actually!

Yanmar 6LP

No it hasn't but it dose take quite a bit of turning over to start in cold weather
So I thought let's fit glow plugs.
Phil.

Is it a 24 valve 6lp or 12 valve?

RIBase
I've got a 12V Landcruiser with an unknown but intergalactic mileage and it starts on the button (touches a lot of wood). I did a quick search on the Land Cruiser forum and the only real post on the difficult to start was based on air getting in to the system.

I'm not sure the 24V was fitted with glow plugs.

19850-64031 is the Toyota number, I think.

24v yanmar has 2 plugs in the manifold my 100series landcruiser has a heater core built into the manifold but im pretty sure its not the same as the yanmar plugs which screw into the inlet manifold
They are usually only fitted to engines destined for cold climates
Any 6lps I've seen with poor starting have been low on compression. maybe worth checking valve clearances first.
As for getting plugs from toyota for a 24v engine you may find the very last of the hdj80 series which came with the 24v engine and mechanical pump might have inlet manifold mounted heater plugs.
Thats the closest engine to the 24v yanmar
Although most stuff is the same as the hdj100 but that engine has the electronic pump

Is it slow to turn over on the starter? I'm sure I've been told that can affect the starting as well.

I completely replaced all my battery cables and battery switches over Christmas as they were somewhat overdue a change and had enough resistance in them that after a long run, they would be pretty warm and the engine would be very slow to crank.

That made a big difference to the cranking speed for me. Mine was never slow to start from cold, but now starts before I can let go of the key it's so quick, whether cold or hot!

I have a 12valve landcruiser and it has 6 glowplugs; as far as I know the 24 v has the same setup.
Although, if you want to add glowplugs, it would be easier to fit them in the inlet manifold. Fitting a webasto heater might also help.
