Ais & nmea

I have just got an AIS transponder and plan to fit this weekend
, I am unsure about the correct method of joining to my Garmin plotter.
Do I simply join the same wires as the vhf to plotter link ?

Unlikely as the vhf will probably be low speed 0183 whereas the AIS will be 38,400 high speed. Most Garmin plotters have 2 or 3 nmea0183 inputs and you can set the comms speed in the menus.

You need to specify the model of garmin also useful if you gave an indication how you wanted to connect. As willk said nmea 0182. Nmea 2000 aka N2k and various other plotters support Ethernet all be it that's not an option for your transponder.

I've got these AIT2000's on both boats and never had any issue with them.

However, the only problem I came across recently was my Garmin Plotter decided it would start displaying my own AIS transmission, which due to the slight time lag was chasing me from behind as a 'dangerous' vessel. A bit unnerving having something coming up from the rear at 40kts until I realised it was me. Not sure who would be the stand-on vessel.

I had this with the Lowrance HDS until I found a menu setting to enter my own mmsi number, problem solved[emoji106]

Not that simple in my case. All has been installed and working fine for a number of years until one trip late this season when it played up. Strangely been fine since too.
