All's not well on the Silva screen!

Our boat was originally specced up to be fitted with an icom, however when we took delivery a shiny new silva had been fitted in the shiny new console. I said "that's not an icom!", our friendly rib manufacturer said "I assure you its just as good". Now the LCD screen seems to have gone. No amount of fiddling with the contrast or back light display seems to improve the situation.

Anybody got any ideas what the problem might be? Also does anybody know what length of warranty is usually issued with these radios? We have had the boat less than a year so should be OK?

I got sent a replacement a few weeks after sending mine in - that had stopped all together after smoking quite a bit having got water inside it.

Silva radios are not in the same league as Icom. Get a refund and have an Icom fitted, your radio as an extreamly important bit of safety kit best not to scrimp on it.

Icom

After many years on vessels both in Uk and overseas I conclude that there is only one set ( excepting larger "bridge" vls com systems) and it is the icom.

We have tried most and the Icom is unbeatable and ,in the rare case of a problem ,their attidude to service sets the benchmark for all in the marine industry.

If you paid for an Icom and accepted something else, with a balance refund then sorry to say you sold yourself out. If you did not get a balance refund then do yourself a big favour and insist on your first choice as it is the best and your life may depend upon it.

Cheers

John

I went through three Silvas in less than a year before buying an Icom. I wouldn't buy another under any circumstances.

Icom wins!

Thanks to all who responded. I think its fairly obvious that the Icom is generally regarded as the preferred choice. Prosport have admitted that they have also had problems with Silva and have had to send a few back. Straight away they agreed to replace the Silva with an Icom. Its nice to have no quibble no fuss after sales service.....so problem sorted, thanks everyone.
