Chris

I've found the standard horizon handheld to be very good and mailspeed are offering them for less than 90 quick inc p&p

Don't have an up-to-date comments on handheld GPS as I've had a fixed set for ages. However when we had a Garmin GPSmap72 I found it to be a good little unit

and in complete opposite, my handheld is a museum piece, as Iv'e had a fixed VHF for ages.....

Got a Garmin12 (predecessor of the 72!). It's not far off it's 18th birthday, and still going strong.

The 12/72 are waterproof and also talk NMEA, which may or may not be useful if you have DSC floating around. THey also have the advantage that with a charged set of batteris they will switch seamlessly from external to internal power without forgetting anything or rebooting themselves.

+1 for GPS72 I had one in a marine mount on the Destroyer. Shut off the isolator and it would beep a 30 second warning to automatically power-down if you didn't press a key, so you had to be a muppet to leave it on by accident.

Also +1 for the Standard Horizon though mine is the older HX270E
