Battery Cable

Looking to replace the battery cables on my 50HP Yam 2st, would 16mm2 cable be ok as the next step up is 25mm2 and is a lot more money? 16mm is rated at 110a and 25mm is 170a?

It all depends on the length of run

Using jump lead cables is brilliant do they last as long as the "marine grade" battery cables which at £8 a metre are nearly 3 times the price!

Simply Professional Copper Jump Leads 5m x 50mm² 800Amp | Autosessive

They definitely won't be tinned & unlikely to be stranded. Wrong cable for the job.

As I said, euro car parts are 20 odd quid depending on the sale special you catch, weekends are normally 40% recently....

Top Tech Booster Cables 25mm - 600 Amp 5.0 mtr

No idea on how they last compared to marine equivalent I'm afraid, I assume they won't last the same though if I was a betting man.

Edit...it is no more or less suitable than welding cable if that is being considered, only reason I mentioned it. I would personally buy marine cable for wiring an outboard but to each their own.

Debatable benifits of Tinned cable of that size/diameter IMO PD...
and welding cable is very High grade/high conductivity ..it generally comes with a much thicker more robust Plastic covering too
Used it for years..nice to beat the "Marine Premium" Pirates too

I doubt they are solid....... interested as to why they are "wrong" though

Good to know welding cable has held up for you maximus, I'll see how mines hold up. Not fair comparison perhaps as mines is to power this thing to car so not living in water like an outboard.

I've used welding cables an a few boats with no ill effects currently 15 years old on our 3.8m rib and still going strong
I always solder and let the solder flow up the cable a little then tape up the sheath to the terminal to stop water ingress

Welding cable is fine, all the welding cables I've made up over the years have been stranded & tinned. Stranded cables are much more flexible & are less prone to fractures in the cores. Solid strand cables aren't designed for applications that involve movement or vibration, the copper cores will work harden & fracture over time. Welding cable gets chucked about & abused as part of its job description, no problem[emoji106]. When I refer to solid strand cables, I'm not on about a single solid core, I refer to the make up of the cable. The 50mm jump leads might comprise of 20x2.5mm strands, where as a 50mm "flexible" welding/ battery cable might be made up of 100x0.5mm strands. This makes for a much more supple cable that is easier to route & more robust.
Personally I wouldn't let non-tinned cable near to my boat, but each to their own, the difference in price is negligible in the big scheme of things.
